When the elderly Brewster sisters offer a glass of their homemade elderberry wine laced with arsenic to lonely old men, the results are always fatal – and hilarious. It’s up to their young nephew Mortimer, a drama-hating theatre critic, to deal with his homicidal aunts, his murderous brother who has recently undergone plastic surgery (and now looks like Boris Karloff), his newly betrothed fiancé, the local police department and, of course, his uncle who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt – the “locks” for the Panama Canal he digs in the basement are just the right size for the sisters’ victims. It’s a fast-paced, laugh-filled show that is considered one of the best of its genre and remains as funny today as the day it premiered. Cary Grant starred in the very successful screen version.
